The energy balance explained

by Gianluca Tognon

It is often said that being overweight results from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. When more food energy is consumed than is needed, excess fat accumulates in the fat cells in the adipose tissue. Scientists define this situation as an imbalance in the energy balance. But what is energy balance? And what happens in the body when we eat too much or too little food? EUFIC, the EU food information council, has taken the opportunity to answer this question by producing the video that you can see at the top of this post. The video explains the science behind the balance that exists between the energy getting into the body when we eat and the energy that is consumed through physical activity. Practical examples are also given of habits that can be incorporated into everyone’s lifestyle in order to reach a healthy balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Other useful tips, expressed in a way that is easy to understand by consumers, can be found on the EUFIC website.

I am glad to share these educational tools with the readers of my blog. Feel free to use the comment box below for questions and comments about the energy balance.
